Barony College has officially opened its Pony Club Centre, the only Pony Club Centre in Dumfries and Galloway catering for riders aged 4 to 21 years old who do not own their own pony.
Based at the Equestrian Centre on the campus at Parkgate, Barony College signed up to become a Pony Club Centre after overwhelming demand from young riders taking part in their riding school courses last year.
Jackie Irving, who heads up the Equestrian Centre at Barony, said:
“We were already an approved British Horse Society Where to Train Centre so becoming a Pony Club Centre seemed like a logical next step.
It means we can offer fun and affordable access to riding for school aged children who don’t have their own pony, as well as trips and social occasions.
Safety is our number one priority, closely followed by making sure all our young riders have lots of fun.
For those who want to take things further there are also plenty of opportunities to learn, achieve badges and awards.
There has already been a lot of interest in the centre and we’re looking forward to seeing our members flourish.”
The Pony Club is an international youth voluntary organisation founded 80 years ago to encourage young people to ride, learn and enjoy horses.
Dumfries and Galloway already has a number of very popular Pony Club Branches where members ride their own pony, but The Pony Club Centre at Barony College is one of the first in the region to offer membership to people who do not have a pony of their own.
Annual membership costs £22 and members then pay for the activities or sessions they want to take part in.
The Pony Club Centre at Barony College got off to a busy start during the October School Holidays with a series of short courses lasting five, three or two days.
During school term time activities will take place in the evenings and at weekends.
