ACCESS to Fish Farming

The Aquaculture Curriculum and Career Entry for Secondary Schools (ACCESS) project which is funded by the European Fisheries Fund is aimed at formally engaging Secondary schools and 14 – 16 year old school pupils specifically with the career opportunities that exist in the growing aquaculture industries within Scotland and further afield.

The Project will use the recently developed 4 credit National Progression Awards (NPA’s) in Aquaculture at levels 4 and 5 (Intermediate levels 1 and 2) as the focus for delivery over a two year period commencing in the Spring of 2012.

Aims of the Project

The overall aim is to widen access to the Scottish aquaculture curriculum designed for Secondary Schools, in order to:

  • develop young people’s understanding of aquaculture (emphasising finfish and shellfish) and make them aware of career opportunities that exist
  •  provide episodes of supervised, safe, practical fish farm experience
  •  provide a pathway to employment, boosting the recruitment of well motivated young people to the Scottish aquaculture industry.
