Aquaculture and Sport Fisheries Management
Barony College offers some of the best practical facilities available for aquaculture and sport fisheries management education and training, and is highly regarded by employers. The college’s commercial trout farm has the capacity to produce up to 50 tonnes of fish per annum and the hatchery facilities enable our time students and trainees to be involved in ova production, hatching and early rearing, as well as on-growing.
‘Work-based learning’ programmes are available to help fish farm employees to further their careers through skills and knowledge development, leading to recognised qualifications. A college based full time course is an ideal preparation for many when preparing for entry to the aquaculture industry. If full time college attendance is not possible, one of our distance learning programmes may provide a useful alternative.
Working in partnership with selected secondary schools in Scotland, we support the delivery of the National Progression Award in Aquaculture, designed for 14-16 year olds. This introductory programme and qualification includes work experience, helping young people to decide whether an aquaculture career suits them, before they leave school.
Through our extensive links with the aquaculture industry, we can help you to find the initial employment opportunity and career pathway that best fits your aspirations.
In addition, the leisure-related sectors, sport fisheries management and aquatics also offer an increasing range of employment opportunities. This spans employment in small-scale private commercial fisheries through to scientific or management posts within government organisations. Many sport fisheries rear their own fish, making fish husbandry skills as important as habitat and fish stock management.
The Barony sport fishery and a mile of the river Ae is complemented by access to many local fisheries, providing a college facility for fishery management that is second to none. A full time course, work based learning and distance learning programmes are available to support those targeting a fishery career.
