This is a region rich in historical, cultural and natural heritage. Its rolling landscapes of forests and woodlands, hills, moorland, unpolluted freshwater lochs, rivers and stunning coastline, all support an abundance of plants and wildlife.
The productive pastures of the region sustain a thriving farming community with a predominance of dairy, beef and sheep production. The forests and woodlands of the area are a rich source of timber, and also provide a range of recreational opportunities for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers.
The region's main town, Dumfries, is situated on the banks of the River Nith and is only 10 miles from the College. It is a bustling market town with an excellent shopping centre and a variety of pubs, clubs, sports centres, swimming pool and an ice rink. It is also home to the region's senior league football club "Queen of the South".
