Course Details:
This course is aimed at anyone who wishes to become a registered veterinary nurse, but do not have the minimum entry criteria for direct entry into the Veterinary Nursing courses. It is also ideal for those employed on a full or part-time basis in veterinary practices.
The main topics covered include:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Handling, Welfare and Care of Small Animals
- Basic Nursing Skills
- Health, Safety and Hygiene
- Nutrition
- Reception and Communication Skills
- Parasitology
You will attend College on a block release basis, with the balance of the time spent in a veterinary practice placement supplementing your learning with on the job experience. During this time you will continue to be supported by the teaching staff at the College.
Once you have gained an Animal Nursing Assistants Qualification, job opportunities within a veterinary practice will be more accessible to you. As your new title suggests you will be an Assistant to Veterinary Surgeons and also Veterinary Nurses. Your role will involve assisting members of the veterinary practice team, working with animals and helping to care for them. You may also play an important and active role at reception which will entail communicating with clients.
Entry Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 Standard Grades at level 3 (or equivalent) preferably including Maths, English or a science subject and ideally a minimum of one week work experience in a veterinary practice.
