Work Based Training

Instead of attending a full-time college course, you can earn a wage whilst working towards industry qualifications through S/NVQs and Modern Apprenticeship programmes. These qualifications guarantee a person’s ability to do a job and will equip you with a range of transferable skills valued by employers. Successful completion will improve your future employability and career prospects.

In order to undertake a VQ or Modern Apprenticeship, you will have to be working with an employer who is prepared to support you throughout your training. If you are not currently in suitable employment, the College may be able to assist you in finding suitable work in your area of interest.

Funding may be currently available for those aged 16 – 19, who are resident in Scotland. In addition, limited funding may be available for those over the age of 19 through the Adult Modern Apprenticeship Scheme in Engineering. For other over the age of 19 who are not eligible for funded programmes, there is the option for employers to contribute towards your training.

More details about each of the following qualifications currently available through Barony College can be found in the appropriate sections of this prospectus:

  • SVQ2/SVQ3 (Modern Apprenticeship) Agriculture
  • SVQ2 Animal Care
  • SVQ2 Aquaculture
  • SVQ2/SVQ3 (Modern Apprenticeship) Land-based Service Engineering
  • SVQ2 Fisheries Management
  • SVQ2 Forestry (Arboriculture/Harvesting)
  • SVQ2/SVQ3 (Modern Apprenticeship) Amenity Horticulture
  • NVQ2/3 Parts Training

Although skills are predominantly developed and assessed in the work-place, supported by course tutors and assessors from the college, some block attendance may be required at college to undertake specialist units and distance learning packs are available for some courses.
