Special Programmes
Barony College offers a unique and flexible service for students with learning disabilities. Special Programmes cater for people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.
The Special Programmes courses are based in a self-contained unit, which has its own garden and polytunnel. These have been designed with an understanding of lack of mobility and with ease of maintenance a priority. The classroom has a comfortable and reassuring atmosphere.
At entry, an individual learning plan is formed for each student. The aim of this is to help each to progress with some aspects of their lives, as appropriate to their abilities and interests. We concentrate on topics that are of real benefit in life. To allow for greater flexibility, no formal curriculum is followed. However, the main themes that we work from are:
- Skills for independence
- Work and social skills
- Workplace experience
- Health and safe living
- Horticulture
- Global awareness
- Helping others.
Our experienced staff work to create a very positive learning environment where everyone is treated as an individual and learning and achieving is fun.

STUDENT CASE STUDY
Kenny Morrison from Dumfries had been working with the Care Trust for several years, during which time he enrolled on the Employment Evaluation course. On completion in June 2002, and having been awarded the HOPE Service shield as the student most ready for work, he decided that a change of workplace was needed. With the help of HOPE Service, he gained a placement detailing cars for the police. Today, he remains a valued member of the team in the garage, where the pride, enthusiasm and attitude that he exhibited at Barony continue to shine through.
