Course Details:
This is a work-based programme, which builds on the skills gained in the work-place. Most of the time is spent in a working environment, with college attendance on a day release basis over 30 weeks.
Topics covered include:
- Plant Propagation
- Plant Establishment and Maintenance
- Machinery and Equipment Use and Maintenance
- Turf Establishment and Maintenance
- Health and Safety
Entry Requirements:
All applicants must be employed For recent school leavers 3 Standard Grade passes (preferably in English, Maths and a Science) at level 3 or above
All applicants will have a genuine interest in the subject
STUDENT CASE STUDY
Kiel Goodridge is from Wrexham in North Wales. He originally moved to Scotland as his family relocated for work, and he was keen to continue his studies.
He originally completed the Rural Mechanics course at Barony, then an opportunity arose at the college, where he worked on the grounds and in the walled garden alongside studying towards the SVQ 2 in Amenity Horticulture. He finished working at the college last summer and enrolled on the National Certificate in Horticulture which he is in the process of completing.
“I have really enjoyed the course, which has been varied and wide ranging and I have gained lots of experience. My time at Barony has given my plenty of opportunities to work and various projects, including building show gardens for Gardening Scotland and at RHS Tatton Flower Show. I’m really looking forward to getting involved with the show garden again this year and I also hope to get involved in the world skills challenge.”
