Course Details:
The course is intended to prepare you for a career in many areas in horticulture. The course is designed to be flexible. In the fulltime mode, you will study 3 days per week over 40 weeks. This should allow you to continue with part-time work whilst you study. The course would also suit students who would like to go on to study horticulture at University level. Some of the topics are:
• External Plant Displays
• Propagation
• Horticultural Production (Outdoors)
• Turf Maintenance in Parks/Gardens
Entry Requirements:
Satisfactory completion of the first year programme
For mature applicants, considerable work experience in horticulture/ forestry / agriculture or engineering and / or education at further or higher education levels
All applicants will have a genuine interest in the subject.
STUDENT CASE STUDY
Kiel Goodridge is from Wrexham in North Wales. He originally moved to Scotland as his family relocated for work, and he was keen to continue his studies.
He originally completed the Rural Mechanics course at Barony, then an opportunity arose at the college, where he worked on the grounds and in the walled garden alongside studying towards the SVQ 2 in Amenity Horticulture. He finished working at the college last summer and enrolled on the National Certificate in Horticulture which he is in the process of completing.
“I have really enjoyed the course, which has been varied and wide ranging and I have gained lots of experience. My time at Barony has given my plenty of opportunities to work and various projects, including building show gardens for Gardening Scotland and at RHS Tatton Flower Show. I’m really looking forward to getting involved with the show garden again this year and I also hope to get involved in the world skills challenge.”
