Course Details:
Trees and Treework Modern Apprenticeship SVQ Levels 2 and 3: (specialisms in Arboriculture, Forest Mechanisation or Forest Management)
These programmes are suited to those who would like to earn and learn at the same time. The apprenticeships are industry recognised and comprise Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs), core skills and technical certificates. You must be employed or have an employer who would be willing to employ you. Funding for this learning route is targeted at priority age groups. On average it takes between 12 and 24 months to complete a Modern Apprenticeship. Some of the topics are:
• Chainsaw Use
• Pesticide Use
• Forest Machine Use
• Tree Climbing
Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be employed
For recent school leavers 3 Standard Grade passes (preferably in English, Maths and a Science) at level 3 or above
All applicants will have a genuine interest in the subject.
STUDENT CASE STUDY
Finlay Miller from Dumfries left school and began working for his dad at John Miller Transport in Dumfries. Being in the outdoors appealed to Finlay, so after a discussion with his dad, he decided to attend Barony College on the National Certificate in Forestry.
Finlay found the knowledge he gained on the NC course was very useful, and the practical work he undertook at Barony helped him greatly in preparing for working life.
After completion of the course, Finlay secured employment at Protree, one of the largest tree contractors in Britain. He has also decided to continue his studies at Barony on the work-based SVQ2 in Arboriculture.
