Course Details:
This course can be taken full-time over one year, or by a series of block attendance over two years. It is suitable for those who wish to gain employment as either agricultural or forestry engineers and covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Engine Repair, Service and Maintenance
- Information Technology
- Electrical Systems
- Transmission Repair, Service and Maintenance
- Braking System Repair, Service and Maintenance
- Hydraulic Systems
- Electronic Systems
- Agricultural Machines
- Forest Harvesting Machines and Harvester Heads
- Welding and Fabrication
- Machine Shop Work
The course is very practical in nature and will include carrying out servicing and maintenance tasks on a range of equipment which has developed faults when in use (real repairs) – this approach adds realism to the course and prepares the individual to gain employment with a dealer or to progress to a HN programme.
Forestry Machine Operation: For those who wish to develop a career as a machine operator there will be an option to undertake an additional 4 week intensive programme on forwarder operation on completion of Forestry Engineering before undertaking a 3 week harvester operation course with our European partner Vanamo College in Sweden.
Entry Requirements:
- Three Standard Grades (Grade 3 or above) in Maths, English and a Science subject OR
- Successful completion of Introduction to Service Engineering course.
STUDENT CASE STUDY
Mark Thomas from Sanquhar left school and started work with Buccleuch Estates, then went to work as a fencing contractor. He had always had an interest in tractors and farm machinery, and was becoming discontented with his fencing career, so decided on a change.
That’s when he came to Barony College on the full-time Land-Based Engineering course. As part of Mark’s work experience on the course, he worked with John McNae (Claas Dealer) at Tarbolton. They were very impressed with Mark’s attitude and application, so much so that they offered him a job when he completed the course. Mark felt that the knowledge he learnt at the College stood him in good stead for working in the industry.
