Course Details:
This course is for anyone who wishes to develop his or her knowledge of Animal Care and gain a College qualification. A potential advantage of the Barony programme is that candidates are not obliged to find a work-placement. Our distance learning packs can be completed by anyone, irrespective of circumstances or locality, and are thus an ideal option for those currently in alternative employment, at home looking after children or living or working outside Scotland.
f you have enrolled on one of the Animal Care courses you will be able to help out in the South of Scotland Wildlife Hospital, which is located next door to the Animal Care Training Centre. Duties will include cleaning out animal pens, assisting in treatment of patients, the care of orphaned wildlife, maintenance of the facility and much more. As a student at the Barony you also get discounted membership to support the wildlife hospital.
- We are a registered Charity with all funds going to the treatment of injured wildlife
- We aim to help wildlife casualties by providing them with rehabilitation within a natural environment until they are able to be returned to the wild
- Preliminary diagnosis and treatment is provided by local Veterinary Surgeons who then refer the patients to us.

Gillian McCulloch came to Barony College in 2008, and completed two years studying HNC and HND Animal Care. She has always known that being and working with animals is what she wanted to do.
Gillian said: "I chose the Animal Care course as I knew I would enjoy studying all aspects and gain more experience with animals. I knew by choosing this course it would help me get to where I'd want to be in the future. The work was very challenging, however I soon learned that studying would pay off in the end. I gained a lot of support from all my lecturers which also helped me to enjoy the course. It has helped me in my current job as Animal Care Assistant at the Scottish SPCA. It gave me a lot of background knowledge, and some of my favourite units I studied like behaviour, welfare and anatomy are all things I deal with in everyday work. I am so glad to have achieved my dream job. I am very passionate about the charity and love every minute of it".
