Course Details:
This is an on farm work-based programme which builds on farm work skills. Most of your time is spent on farm in a working environment, with college attendance on a day or block release basis typically over one year where the underpinning knowledge or theory behind the practices is taught. These college training days will cover both knowledge and practical skills in the areas of:
- Livestock Husbandry Practices
- Tractor and Machinery Operation and Maintenance
- Farm and Estate Maintenance Skills
- Farm Record Keeping and Personal Development
There are opportunities for those who successfully complete the course to remain in employment, to progress onto an SVQ 3/Modern Apprenticeship programme or undertake a full-time agriculture course.
Entry Requirements:
- A genuine interest and motivation to work in the agriculture industry is essential
- A satisfactory standard of literacy and numeracy is needed
- Farm based employment
STUDENT CASE STUDY
Andrew Hiddleston started at Barony on the National Certificate in Agriculture, then progressed onto SVQ2, and continued to undertake his HNC in Agriculture.
He chose to study agriculture at Barony as his interest from an early age was in farming where he was keen to be involved in the running of the family livestock business.
Andrew said: “I really enjoyed the course. I was in the first group of students to undertake the HNC course at Barony so it was a learning curve for both tutors and students, and being a 3 day a week course also helped, as it meant I could balance studying whilst lending a hand with tasks on the family farm. I found value in the course as it’s really helping me push the family farm forward utilising my new knowledge and techniques.”
