Agriculture
Barony College has some of the best training facilities for agriculture in Scotland, with a fully commercial 260 hectare farm forming part of the College’s extensive campus. The farm’s operational activities are integrated into the training programmes offered, providing you with hands-on experience of modern farming methods and practice. Barony College prides itself in being the only educational facility in Scotland to provide practical dairy education and training, being able to offer a large range of farm enterprises to positively contribute to your learning experience.
You will work with our large herd of pedigree Holstein Friesian cows, breeding heifers, young stock followers, beef cattle, flock of breeding ewes (including our expanding flock of Easy Care ewes) and our Red Deer venison production unit. In addition, you will be involved in our varied grassland production and arable cropping operations.
Our Dairy Technology Centre provides you with an exciting opportunity to gain practical experience in a high animal welfare unit. The most technologically advanced dairy unit to be found in any UK Agricultural College, the centre provides a unique resource for you to adopt a ‘learning by doing’ approach to your studies. The Dairy Technology Centre is equipped with the latest milking and herd management technology including a voluntary robotic milking unit, a large herringbone parlour and automated cow handling system.
There are a number of exciting ongoing projects and developing industry partnerships within agriculture at Barony, such as nutritional trials on livestock, novel animal breeding programmes and experimental meat production systems.
Our courses are designed to meet industry recognised requirements for people with both practical skills and knowledge, who are capable of adapting and embracing new technologies and techniques for a rewarding career in agriculture.
