Barony's Grounds
There is ample car and coach parking available near the main entrance to the front of Kirkmichael House. The open pastures, ponds, small mixed woodlands, specimen trees lining the entrance path and landscaped grounds make the estate an ideal venue for outdoor events.
From the spring onwards the Barony blooms, starting with banks of snowdrops and daffodils along the near by pond side and followed by a riot of Azaleas and Rhododendrons in May.
The Kirkmichael House and surrounding estate supported a thriving self-sufficient community in the 19th century. Today many visitors enjoy the estate and public access is provided through a managed network of paths and countryside seating.
Special features of interest include a small nature reserve, which supports a wide range of moths and butterflies, a two acre sport fishery and the river Ae, the most productive nursery of the river Annan salmon fishery.
The large walled garden, which used to grow produce to feed the Kirkmichael House residents and its staff, supports the college horticultural training unit today.
Guided tours to our more recent additions, the red deer and trout farm can also be arranged. If you are more inclined towards gardening, the walled garden may be the place to visit. On occasions you can even buy a plant or two to take home!
