One of the UK's most innovative fisheries companies has identified Barony College students as their first choice for new recruits into the industry.

Landcatch Ltd based in Argyll is a specialist Atlantic salmon breeding company producing around 5 million juvenile fish and up to 40 million salmon eggs each year which are then sold to fish farms for on-growing.  The company employs 52 people in Scotland and has begun to actively target Barony fisheries students because of the quality of the experience they have.

Dave Danson, Freshwater Production Manager at Landcatch says Barony students are among the best in the industry.

"I and many of my colleagues at Landcatch studied at Barony College and over the years we have found that Barony students are very well suited to our operations at Landcatch.  We have a wide range of employment opportunities here, and that breadth of opportunity is matched well by the breadth of learning that fisheries students get at Barony.

"It's not simply that we're biased because so many of our management team studied there.  We have developed close links with Barony that go back 25 years and we have hosted visits from the College in the past so that students can see first hand what's involved in working for Landcatch.  We are very keen to explore employment opportunities with Barony fisheries students who have an interest in the techniques used in breeding salmon."

Five ex-Barony students now work at Landcatch, many of them in senior or management positions.  The first to join the company was Carol Small in 1985.  She said:

""I visited Landcatch on a college tour and was very impressed by both the freshwater and seawater facilities.  The Barony provided me with the technical and practical skills which enabled me to secure a job with Landcatch within a month of leaving college.  Landcatch as a company has evolved greatly over the last 24 years and has given me the opportunity to be involved with broodstock production and all the recent advances in breeding technology.  As Fish Health Manager my job is always challenging as new diseases appear within the industry.  The fish farming industry is always changing which makes working within it both interesting and challenging."

Neil Wood of Barony College who recently visited Landcatch said he was delighted that Barony fisheries students were being targeted by Landcatch.

"The fish farming and aquaculture industries offer tremendous job prospects in Scotland.  We work hard at building relationships with employers in all our courses, but to have a company of such calibre proactively seek out our best students is a real endorsement of our practical-based approach to learning.

"It was great to meet the five ex-Barony students who now work at Landcatch and I'm looking forward to seeing more of our students develop their careers at Landcatch over the coming years."
